This month we are comparing three different grape varieties from various producers in France, South Africa and Argentina. We have a fantastic Syrah from France to compare with a Shiraz (same grape variety different name) from South Africa. Secondly, two wonderfully contrasting styles of Viognier - one from South Africa and one from Argentina. And lastly, a stylish and refined French Malbec (with a little bit of Merlot) and a luscious, full bodied Argentine Malbec.

Domaine La Bastide Syrah Vieilles Vignes, Aude Hauterive 2019 (14.5% Vol) Regular price £12.79. Intense nose of red fruits, spice and cherries. Lots of red fruit flavour on the palate with silky soft tannins leading to a long finish. Spicy stews or sausage accompany this wine well.

Franschhoek Cellar Baker Station Shiraz 2020 (14% Vol) Regular price £8.59. A wine with mulberry and plum flavours on the nose, it has soft ripe tannins that provide a well-structured and balanced wine on the palate. A juicy finish pairs this wine well with sausages or cured meats.

Bellingham Bernard Series Hand Picked Viognier 2019 (13.5% Vol) Regular price £14.49. Fragrances of peach and white pear dominate. Full flavours of peach, apricot and a tropical fruit touch with a hint of spice from oak ageing on the palate.

Los Haroldos Chacabuco Viognier 2021 (13% Vol) Regular price £10.09. Aromas of peach and apricot with some floral and aromatic notes. The palate is complex, fresh and fruit-filled with a lingering finish. Good match to food with some mild spice.

Cima Blanca Malbec 2021 (13.5% Vol) Regular price £9.30. The nose shows fresh plums and blackberries, the palate is packed with black and red-berried fruit. A well-balanced wine, with a fresh finish. Very enjoyable with mature cheeses.

Chateau la Coustarelle, Cahors 2015 (14% Vol) Regular price £13.89. A full-bodied Cahors with dark cherry on both the nose and palate, which is accompanied by slight aromas of coffee. Goes well with venison or pheasant.
