May Selection Box 2024 (Spain)

Out with new and in with the old! After last month's successful box of 'new wines' we are this month revisiting some 'old favourites' from Spain. We have a lovely fresh, fruity and fun wine from Familia Torres, a complex and interesting 100% Viura from Urbina in Rioja, A tried and tested classic in the form of Vina Real Blanco also from Rioja, two wonderful examples of the classic Spanish grape Garnacha and a blend of Monastrell, Garnacha and Tempranillo from a great producer in Almansa. All for the discounted price of £73. As always tasting notes and food matches will accompany the wines.

Torres Viña Esmeralda, Catalonia, Spain 2021/22 (11.5% Vol) £11.95
Notes of tropical and green fruits, and orange blossom on the nose. The palate shows passion fruit, pear, banana and lychee. Makes a fine aperitif.

Urbina Blanco Viura, Rioja, Spain (12.5% Vol) £12.80
100% Viura. This white Rioja shows lovely aromatic citrus and floral notes on the nose. It has a well-structured and rounded palate, with apricot, peach and pear flavours, a creamy texture with well-balanced acidity and a long, lingering finish. Great with roast Chicken.

Viña Real Barrel Fermented Blanco, Rioja, Spain 2020/21 (13% Vol) £12.45
On the nose - pineapple, apple, vanilla and nuttiness from the oak ageing. Fresh and dry on the palate. An interesting wine with lots of class for the price. Pairs nicely with most Spanish prawn dishes.

Piqueras Old Vines Garnacha, Almansa, Spain 2021 (14.5% Vol) £12.95
Full bodied red, harvested from low yielding old vines with rich damson flavours and generous richness on the palate. Smooth juicy tannins and good levels of natural acidity combine to offer a wine full of flavour. Enjoy this wine with roasted or grilled red meat or game bird dishes.

Marius Reserva, Almansa, Spain 2020 (14% Vol) £12.95
50% Monastrell, 25% Garnacha Tintorera, 25% Tempranillo. Intense and seductive aromas of damsons, plums, cassis and vanilla on the nose. Rich and velvety on the palate with berry fruits, black pepper and cassis. With fine tannins and long plummy finish, this wine is drinking well now but could be laid down to age. Excellent with strong, rich stews.

Bodegas Langa Pasion Garnacha, Calatayud, Spain 2020 (14% Vol) £13.55
Deep, cherry red in colour, hints of chocolate, coffee and red fruits. Velvety tannins and a light, refreshing acidity all leading to a long, rounded finish. Goes brilliantly with cured meats and cheeses.
